Code of Respect

Our Pledge
We as members, contributors, and leaders pledge to make participation in Re:Build a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, caste, colour, visible or invisible disability, ethnicity, sex characteristics, gender identity and expression, level of experience, education, socio-economic status, nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, or sexual identity and orientation.
We pledge to act and interact in ways that contribute to an open, welcoming, diverse, inclusive, and healthy community.
Our Standards
Examples of behaviour that contribute to a positive environment include:
- Demonstrating empathy and kindness toward other people
- Being respectful of differing opinions, viewpoints, and experiences
- Giving and gracefully accepting constructive feedback
- Accepting responsibility and apologising to those affected by our mistakes, and learning from the experience
- Focusing on what is best not just for us as individuals, but for the overall community
Examples of unacceptable behaviour include:
- The use of sexualised language or imagery, and sexual attention or advances of any kind
- Trolling, insulting or derogatory comments, and personal or political attacks
- Public or private harassment
- Publishing others' private information, such as a physical or email address, without their explicit permission
- Other conduct which could reasonably be considered inappropriate in a professional setting
Scope
This Code of Respect applies at all times and in all channels connected with Re:Build, including but not limited to attendance of Re:Build events and activities, and all interactions with others within the community, whether in person or online. It also applies when an individual is officially representing Re:Build in public spaces, such as using an official email address, posting via an official social media account, or acting as an appointed representative at an online or offline event.
This Code of Respect also applies to sponsors, exhibitors and speakers, including booth staff, booth materials, and the content of talks and slides.
Enforcement & Reporting
All participants of Re:Build activities are responsible for upholding our standards of acceptable behaviour. If you have seen, heard, or been made aware of any behaviour that you believe is contrary to our standards and wish to report it, please contact the Re:Build organisers, Kim Fletcher and Dan Hardiker, at kim@rebuildcon.uk and dan@rebuildcon.uk.
During Re:Build events, you may also seek out a member of the conference staff at the registration desk or the Organisers' Office, or contact us by phone/WhatsApp on [number to be published before the event], since email is not always fast enough during a live incident.
If a report concerns one of the two named organisers, the other organiser will handle it, and the organiser who is the subject of the report will not be involved in reviewing or deciding it.
All reported concerns will be reviewed and investigated promptly and fairly, and we will respect the privacy and security of the reporter of any incident.
Organisers may take any action they consider appropriate in response to a breach of this Code, including immediate removal from the event without refund and exclusion from future events. Where anyone's safety is at risk, we will involve venue security and, if necessary, the police.
Enforcement Guidelines
The guidelines below are framed around the ongoing Re:Build community between events; during a live event, organisers may act immediately as described above. Re:Build organisers will follow these Community Impact Guidelines in determining the consequences for any action deemed in violation of this Code of Respect:
1. Correction
Community Impact: Use of inappropriate language or other behaviour deemed unprofessional or unwelcome.
Consequence: A private, written warning from the organisers, providing clarity around the nature of the violation and an explanation of why the behaviour was inappropriate. A public apology may be requested.
2. Warning
Community Impact: A violation through a single incident or series of actions.
Consequence: A warning with consequences for continued behaviour. No interaction with the people involved, including unsolicited interaction with those enforcing the Code of Respect, for a specified period of time, including community spaces and external channels like social media. Violating these terms may lead to a temporary or permanent ban.
3. Temporary Ban
Community Impact: A serious violation of community standards, including sustained inappropriate behaviour.
Consequence: A temporary ban from any interaction or public communication with the community for a specified period of time. No public or private interaction with the people involved, including unsolicited interaction with those enforcing the Code of Respect, is allowed during this period. Violating these terms may lead to a permanent ban.
4. Permanent Ban
Community Impact: Demonstrating a pattern of violation of community standards, including sustained inappropriate behaviour, harassment of an individual, or aggression toward or disparagement of classes of individuals.
Consequence: A permanent ban from any sort of interaction with Re:Build, including future events.
